In CF5 you could also make an ODBC connection from within the CF Administrator. If you are going to do performance comparisons make sure the Advanced Settings are all the same. IIRC the recommended UNchecking of Maintain Database Connections is the default in MX' JDBC interface, so make sure you emulate that and everything else in CF 6/7.
