OK I think I have thought of a way.

Don't do the query in CF at all.
Just pass your search criteria and the start/end rows to a stored procedure.
The SP queries all the records as usual, but then extracts only the rows you
wanted using the start/end, and returns this back to CF as the resultset.
So no excess trips to the database for CF, and no storing of unrequired
recordset data in the cfserver memory.
