I've done this FROM cf, but using perl to create a ps file, convert that to a jpg and return them via cfcontent.
I've also used cf to write the postscript directly, and used ghostscript to convert it to a pdf and to a tif (for printing and viewing respectively) I would think there are plenty of Java options at this point that can do this with ease.
