Personally I use SmarterMail on my own mail servers, sitting behind the open source ASSP antispam gateway. Takes some jiggering to get it to work like that. Among other things you have to use a separate mail server for CF. I would have bought IMS_SE for that if I didn't already have an IMail license sitting around doing nothing.
The wysiwyg web mail is a big crowd pleaser. I wouldn't bother with their antispam tools but thats mostly because ASSP is so effective and a completely hands-off solution once its trained. SM's user management is fine if you are not living inside of it all day long. Its use of xml files for configs is nice but it you are accustomed to keeping your user data in a db it will drive you nuts. You can rent a dedicated server already equipped with a 50-site SmarterMail license for $79/month at Crystaltech.
