Yep...doorway pages are a different beast than these directory sites Doorways are usually same domain for starter....and optimized for specific keywords. That allows you to setup multiple doorways and log through-traffic to see which ones are working and which ones suck.
Directory sites are FAKE directories setup "like" doorway pages (optimized for key words or phrase), but they are different domains than the main site they are sending folks to. This artificially inflates the number of non-reciprical inbound links to the main site and thus makes the main site look like a wealth of info about the subject matter>>>page rank goes up.
