Jake, Do you have a reason why Verity is not an option?
If not, I would recommend using Verity (or Lucene) for better search results. If you go to Ray Camden's site and search for "Verity", you can find several good articles written on the topic. http://ray.camdenfamily.com/ If Verity or Lucene aren't options then LIKE queries are the best option of which I am aware (this is a very good list, so chances are high that someone else has a better answer).
