What concerns me with respect to taking this route is the development path of the product. ColdFusion Application Server would be one hell of a big sourceforge project. Yeah I know linux did it, but there would have to be a sizable brain trust commitment from corporations to keep the CF platform moving forward. I don't see that happening with volunteer work.
