How about inserting some code behind the scenes yourself? For example, when they hit the tab key (you can use javascript to catch the tab key), insert the code <span id="tab"> </span> and then afterwards replacing each span with the tab id with a real tab?
I assume these people are submitting the form to make sure the query works, and then if so, they are given the actual code? Just an idea.
