ColdFusion will not see virtual directories, hence the need for mappings. We have a few overlaps without sites. We found we needed the virtual mapping when the code needed to be executed (such as shared javascripte files) but also needed the mapping so we could access shared CFC's or CFML pages va cfinclude etc.
