Dave, It looks like you only want to open a window that sizes to the image within it (I could be wrong). If that's the case, then here's something I've used before, and it is cross browser compatible (from memory it works in IE, NS, FF and Opera). It may or may not suit your needs, but there's a demo on the page you can try.
