Ian,
Look at it from this way, when you call a method you need to know who has the
right to continue, so the question you asked means you need to handshake with
each other to determine who your talking too.
Basic rules, do they have the right to enter the door.

Andrew Scott
Ok, but I'm looking beyond the security. Is there a way to get data that was
created in the previous call to the web service? Can one create a persistent
web service object with instance data in it? Can one do something like this
basic CFC concept with a web service?
aCFC
<component>
<function name="init" access="remote">
<cfset variables.aValue = "FooBar">
</cfuntion>
<cffunction name="getValue" access="remote">
<cfreturn variables.aValue>
</cffunction>
</cfomponent>
And then play with this overly simple example as such.
<cfset ws = createObject("webservice",http://localhost/aCFC.cfc?wsdl)>
<cfset ws.init()>
<cfoutput>#ws.getValue#</cfoutput>
