If you created the datasource and you wrote the code that puts the data into it, you shouldn't have to check for any of these things when pulling the data back.
True for as far as it goes, but I do a lot of work where I did not create the database schema (but I did create a datasource that points to it) and I did not create the code that puts the data into it. But I have to create the web output from this. So I would advice, based on my experience, don't count on the format of the data going in unless you HAVE created the database, and one and only data manipulation program and will ever be the only one to do so FOR ALL TIME.
