Well - some simple tests with CFWDDX shows that empty strings are fine (as 
you'd expect).  For other simple values (booleans, dates and numbers) empty 
tags result in errors.  For complex types (arrays, recordsets, structs) it will 
create a "default" (empty) object.

I'm not sure if all the parsers follow this behavior (it's not documented as 
far as I can tell) but that's the way the parser in CF7 works.
