Is true that apache is a little harder to configure then IIS, but do people who use Windows XP as the hosting platform really need all those things? Most of them just need a couple of virtual sites that they can use to develop things, and maybe, just maybe have a bunch of modules that actually work and are free... like for example mod_rewrite... I still don't see anything that comes close for IIS... not even after plunking down some money for it...
90% of people who are using IIS on XP, will be much happier with apache (once they get over the initial scare of the myriad of configuration options available). It's easier to install (don't have to go hunting for that windows XP cd), and doesn't need expensive, possibly unstable extensions that apache provides for free out of the box. Yeah sure... that's all you need to do! Done! Of course you might also want to set up alternative extensions, mime types (I need HTA), error handlers, SSL certs, P3P headers and other things... But so what - all you need to do is make a few changes (any changes will do - have some fun and use some keyboard keys that don't get much love like "X" and "Q"!) and voila - a retarded monkey could do it! I like APACHE a whole lot - but the fan-boy mentality that it's "just as easy" as IIS doesn't help anybody. Celebrate its strengths, but be honest about its weaknesses.
