I think a key consideration is the security required (or not) i.e. is the data sensitive or could it be viewed by anyone?
This will determine how you allow remote users to access. If they have fixed locations you could maybe restrict by the source IP address (although this can be faked by a hacker) otherwise you will need to consider authentication at strong enough level to match the value of the data you are protecting.
