But I thought that the license key was system specific.  

When I got one for Windows (cf4) I thought the key started with a W and
someone from a different department got one for Linux and it started
with an L.

Of course my memory is faulty, I haven't had much sleep and all the
dayquil I've taken is starting to make me see weird colors everywhere.

The CF license is for the box (well, the CPUs actually). So if you
install
CF on a box running Windows and then wipe the machine and install Linux,
you
can use the same CF license on that same box.
