That alone doesn't mean they don't follow standards. For security reasons,
it's common for SMTP servers to return a 252 response, which basically will
not confirm nor deny the existence of the mailbox. That complies with RFC
2821.

Of course, you are correct that many servers probably don't strictly conform
to the RFC anyway.
