Recently we asked Ben Forta about MAX: * Q: Will there be a MAX this year? Ben Forta: We're still working through it, we do plan a conference, but details are not finalized yet. Part of what we need to figure out is who the conference is for, and what products it should cover. With the merger with Adobe there are over 70 products in our product line, and so we need to figure which to include, and the type of coverage that each should get. I'd expect that we end up doing something similar to MAX, a company conference dedicated to many of our products, explaining high level direction and vision, providing sneaks at future products, and so on. And that is important to note. When Allaire's DevCon became Macromedia's MAX, some attendees found that there was not as much coverage of specific products as they'd have liked. The truth is there is no way we could create a dedicated DevCon type event for each product. MAX was a Macromedia conference, not a Flash or ColdFusion conference. But there is also a need for those product specific events, conferences than get dedicated far more time to specific products, and that is why we sponsor other events, like CFUNITED for ColdFusion and FlashForward for Flash. * View our new pamphlet for 2006. Here are some quotes from Chris' answers: Q:Why should people come to CFUNITED-06? "CFUNITED is the Greatest Conference of any I've ever been to, Coldfusion or not. It is large enough to have great variety but isn't overwhelming. It has a broad focus without being diluted. And, It has a wealth of information while still being accessible to people of all skill levels. The people you get to meet and interact with are great and the camaraderie of the Coldfusion community is evident. I love how the sessions are given by people in the industry who are approachable and willing to further discuss what they're teaching. I've been using Coldfusion since version 1.5 but I always learn something new at CFUNITED. The things I've learned at each CFUNITED have been put into practice building sites for clients of all types and across many industries. Each year I've attended CFUNITED I can't wait to sign up for the next year to make sure I don't miss out on the valuable information and networking opportunities." Q:Why do you like programming in ColdFusion? "I love Coldfusion because it allows you to focus on the application architecture and not the language. It allows you to make anything from quick and simple forms to complex distributed multi- tier applications and not be bogged down in the "how" of writing web applications but the "why", which is to solve problems and make the users and owners of a web site happy with the solutions that have been implemented." * We have an over flow hotel: Bethesda Marriott (Located about 1.5 miles from the conference center - there will be a shuttle to the conference center all day) 5151 Pooks Hill Road Bethesda MD 20814 To make reservations call: 1.800.228.9290 Use the group code: CFU See http://www.cfunited.com/travel.cfm for more details. *CFLive Hear CFUNITED speakers from your office via breeze talks every Thursday 12:30pm - 1pm EST. Michael Smith: This time we are talking with Sandy Clark about her CFUNITED-06 talk "Cascading Style Sheets - Floating". So why should a developer come to your session Sandy ? Sandy Clark: It seems to me that the biggest hurdle developers face with CSS is how to position items on a page without using tables. In both of my talks this year, I cover positioning. This talk is aimed at getting to the nitty gritty of how to position items on a web page via floating. I intend to go into the specific rules of positioning to give developers a programmers way of looking at CSS floating. MS: So what exactly is floating and do all browsers support it? SC: Floating is a way of positioning items outside of the normal document flow (top to bottom, left to right). We've had floating all along in HTML with images. When a developer positions an image in HTML using align="left", they are actually floating that image and text can "wrap" around it. CSS gives us the ability to apply this type of floating behavior to any item which is using the block box model. All browsers do support float. MS: So what other items can use this? Images? Text? Something else? SC: Floating can be used on any item which follows the block box model. In other words, anything other than in-line. If you float something that is in-line such as information in between tags, then that item also assumes the block box model. MS: I assume you can do more than just align left - what other positions are allowed? SC: The same alignments we are used to. left, right, center and none. The real trick comes to understanding how CSS determines what floats and where. There are 9 rules I will go through regarding this during my talk MS: Cool. So what kinds of things can you do with floating in a real world application? SC: Floating can encompass a lot of different objects, any item can be floated, from a news box, to a picture, to divs acting as columns. The only limit is the programmer's imagination and of course their knowing the rules of floating (which will be covered during my talk) MS: Will you have any code samples in your talk? SC: I always have code samples for my talks. While my samples are not beautiful, they fully illustrate the concepts I am trying to teach MS: Cool - I will look forward to seeing you at CFUNITED. You can see more interviews at http://www.cfunited.com/interviews.cfm CFUNITED-06 is Wed 6/28/06 - Sat 7/1/06 in Bethesda MD, just outside Washington DC. It costs $649 until 1/31/06 then $749. For more information on CFUNITED see http://www.cfunited.com/ --- Cascading Style Sheets - Floating ************************* Designing layouts with Cascading Style Sheets depends on two separate types of positioning, one of which is floating. In this session, Sandra will discuss all about creating layouts with floats.
