http://www.google.nl/search?q=rfc+3098 To protect from slanderers (people that report you as a spammer even though they did ask for the email) you should keep a record of every subscription attempt, including timestamp, IP address and as much information as possible to track them back. You should retain those records for as long as you keep the email address they submitted.
