"just" an excel file could be shift_jis, utf16 (i think that's the 
default), etc. plenty of japanese codepages. if you export it as text 
file, can you read it ok (you'll need a font that can render these chars 
something like arial unicode ms)?

as long as it's not ????s or mojibake you're not too far off.
