There are actually a couple of advantages to using a separate configuration file. First, it doesn't need to be in a location where code can be executed, so you can maintain configuration files outside of your application folders. For example, you might build an application for distribution and want to encrypt your source code. Second, it can be directly edited in end-user applications, to allow non-programmers to manage configuration data.
