Well, Win2k had a lot of services on by default.  There were a lot of
small companies that bought a Win2k machine, and got attacked by that
huge virus that took down the Windows world back then.  They didn't know
that their basic network server was also serving up a default website,
and had FTP/Telnet on as well.  For those that attended Microsoft's
keynote session at last years CFUnited, you will recognize this quote
from the IIS developer that spoke, "That was one of the darkest times in
Microsoft's history."

Most of the 'nix developers try not to do that kind of thing.  That's
not to say that there aren't security vulnerabilities, everybody makes
mistakes.  But at least they aren't making dumb mistakes on purpose, to
give their users easier out of the box functionality.

But I agree with you, both alternatives can be secured, and it takes a
lot of work.  I'd just prefer to use the one that I know is trying to
secure things by default.
