Thanks I thought that the default was false.
if output="false" is not in the function tag the extra charaters show up. I just had: <cffunction access="public" name="myfunction" returntype="string"> IIRC there was once an issue where if there is no output parameter, one got behavior that was neither true or false, but something sort of in between. This may have been fixed in subsequent updates.
