Wow. Lots going on for me. Just catching up on some talk. I LOVE what has been done with Server 2003. MS is finaly taking a better approach, and getting away from the "default unsecure" idea.
To be fair, most linux distros were pretty bad, out of the box, themselves. But, they at least tend to offer options while you're installing, for those who think less is more, security-wise. And generally defaulted on the side of safety over ease of use. Eh, it's a on-going dance, no matter what OS you use. This is one of those cases where game-theory come in too. MS is sooo prolific. That alone is a factor. Of course, we just lost the venerable Major, our "still running" P100 list-serv box, and I'm guessing it's because everything on that box was old as dirt, and MajorDomo is (was) rather prolific itself. Security through obscurity isn't as cool as this defense in depth I hear tell of, although I contend it's as much as a factor as anything else in that practice, and shouldn't be discounted. Bah, I'm wandering off an already wandered subject. Just suffering the effects of a malicious user has made an impression I apparently want to share. Maybe there is a danger in running software that is no longer maintained. Although lack of knowledge is more dangerous. Security is a full time job in itself. Probably a pretty fun job. I can understand small providers not knowing something tho, as I've suffered from being in that position myself. A lot. :-) It's just a sign of the times. You can't leave your doors unlocked any more. Not that you should've before. Look at how all the OS distros are coming more locked down by default. It's a good trend, safety-wise, but safety is always a trade of freedom. *sigh* Ever get that feeling like the one they tried to express in the Seabiscuit movie, where the cowboy comes to a fence which stretches to infinity, sort of seperating his past from the future? Ford and The Duke, heh. A bygone era...
