And now our CFUNITED spotlight interview.
Michael Smith: This time we are talking with John Paul Ashenfelter about
his CFUNITED-06
talk "Testing CF Applications". So why should a developer come to your
session John Paul ?

John Paul Ashenfelter: Well, in my experience very few CF applications
are comprehesively,
routinely, and *automatically* tested. And as Bruce Eckels (author of
Thinking in Java among other
classics) says, "If it's not tested, it's broken". The goal of my
session is to show developers
what kinds of testing they can (and should be doing), what tools are
available for testing their
applications and how they can use those tools to make sure their own
applications are not "broken".

MS: What kind of testing do you think developers should be doing?

JPA: Web applications can be tested at a number of different levels --
from unit-testing individual
components up through load-testing the entire application. I think CF
developers are becoming more
aware of unit-testing at the CFC level using tools like CFUnit and
CFCUnit, especially with the
growing awareness of test-driven development methodologies like Extreme
Programming and SCRUM

MS -interjection about the CFUnit/CFCUnit talks if there are any-

JPA: My focus though, is on testing larger chunks of the application,
methods that operate on
individual pages or a multi-page path through part of a web application.
This is the kind of
testing that many developers (and QA teams) do in an adhoc fashion by
clicking through an
application. Some of the tools in the talk are focused on automating
this sort of testing -- tools
that let you capture an entire chunk of user behavior, standardize it,
and automate it so that
developers can spend more time on development and QA folks can spend
more time on, well, quality.

MS: You're talking about functional .

JPA: Exactly. Functional testing ensures that the application functions
as intended. Whenever a
developer clicks through the registration process or makes a purchase to
see if the
application "works", they are doing functional testing. I personally
think it's better to let the
computer do that sort of boring, repetitive work because that's what
computers are good at -- doing
the same thing over and over, exactly the same every time.

MS: Sounds like you're also talking about regression testing.

JPA: That too. Regression testing is running the same set of tests
against a new version of the
code to ensure that functionality is still the same. Once you've got
functional tests, bundling
those up into a suite of tests that you can run over and over gives you
regression testing.

MS: That sounds pretty complicated. These tools must be expensive and
complicated!

JPA: Well, there *are* expensive tools for this sort of thing, but as
anyone who's seen me speak
knows, I'm really focused on the open source world and there are
excellent open source tools for
doing functional and regression tests on CF applications. We're going to
focus on using the open
source Selenium tool for building functional tests and then automate
those tests to create a
regression test suite.

MS: Wow! But what about load-testing?

JPA: Well, there's plenty of expensive tools for that, and a number of
open source tools. One of
the standard load-testing tools is an application called Grinder.

MS: So you're going to show us how to put our applications *through* the
Grinder.

JPA: Um. Yeah. Exactly.

MS: So is there anything else you'll cover other than functional testing
with Selenium and load
testing with Grinder?

JPA: I'll be lucky to cover all of that in an hour! But I will mention a
few other tools like
DBUnit for setting databases back to a standard state, which is very
important when testing web
applications. And I'd also mention integrating validation tools into the
testing process to ensure
that your web applications generate valid (X)HTML pages.

MS: Sounds like you'd need a whole day to talk about those things!

JPA: Hey, great idea. How about I teach a full-day class before CFUnited
on testing CF applications?

MS: Sounds like a plan, we have scheduled a whole day class on this!

Looking forward to seeing you at CFUNITED.

Testing CF Applications
*************************
Test-driven development is very popular in the Java and Ruby worlds and
becoming moreso in the
ColdFusion world. This session covers the tools that are available to
test ColdFusion applications
and discusses how to implement them into your existing workflow. We'll
specifically cover:

   * CFCUnit/CFUnit for testing ColdFusion code
   * Selenium for testing web pages
   * DBUnit for managing the database during testing
   * Grinder (and similar) load-testing tools

Together, these tools can provide unit, functional, regression, and load
tests for your
applications. Finally, we'll touch on automating these tests so you can
ensure that you are
delivering higher-quality, well-tested code.

Speaker Bio:
John Paul Ashenfelter is CTO of TransitionPoint.com, where he builds
web-based business
