And now our CFUNITED spotlight interview.
Michael Smith: This time we are talking with Douglas Ward about his
CFUNITED-06
talk "Fundamentals of Good Usability". So why should a developer come to
your session Douglas?

Doug Ward: Well, the past year has seen a tremendous amount of attention
paid to client-side
technologies. Obviously, AJAX has made a big splash. Other client-side
technologies, such as Flash,
CSS, and JavaScript, have continued to evolve in terms of capabilities
and sophistication. The
trick, however, is not to simply start adding AJAX to everything you
build, but to understand how
these technologies can be used effectively to create more usable, better
web sites.

MS: So AJAX isn't some sort of magic that instantly makes our
applications better?

DW: The hype certainly makes it seem that way. But the AJAX hype is
similar to the XML hype of a
few years back. I think at one point I actually thought XML would be
able to do my laundry.

MS: AJAX can certainly help with the pots and pans.

DW: Ha! Good one! No, AJAX is a great technology, but just like XML, you
have to know how and when
to use it in order to see any true benefit from it. And the only purpose
of AJAX is to create
easier-to-use, more intuitive web applications. In other words, the
whole point of AJAX is to
improve usability. But if you don't actually know what usability is...

MS: I see where you're going with this.

DW: Usability is the whole point of all of these technologies. But as
developers, we often get so
focused on the technical aspects of our code - writing stored
procedures, looping over arrays,
making http calls - that we forget that the goal is to create
applications that our users find easy-
to-use, useful, and, dare I say it, fun!

The great thing about usability is that you can dramatically improve
your web applications by
understanding, and employing, just a few basic principals. My talk is
focused on demonstrating
those principals so that attendees can turn around and start employing
the techniques immediately -
and immediately see happier users, improved usage statistics, and
happier bosses!

MS: Doug, you spoke at last year's CFUNITED. Will this talk be the same
as last year?

DW: I've revised the talk a based on the feedback I got from last year.
I've expanded and updated
the examples we'll be looking at. We're definitely going to look at some
examples of AJAX in
action. I'm not really going to be spending much time on testing
techniques, but I am going to
provide a much more comprehensive list of resources.

MS: Sounds great.

DW: I'm really excited about CFUNITED this year. The lineup you've put
together is the best ever.
With Adobe having bought Macromedia, and all the recent technologies
coming to the market, there is
plenty to learn and plenty to talk about. I'm looking forward to it.

MS: We look forward to seeing you there!

CFUNITED-06 is Wed 6/28/06 - Sat 7/1/06 in Bethesda MD, just outside
Washington DC.

Fundamentals of Good Usability
*************************
Usability is today's competitive advantage. Industry leaders understand
this. Google has codified
10 principals that guide its approach to development. Number one is,
"Focus on the user, and all
else will follow." At Microsoft's 2005 PDC, Bill Gates repeatedly
encouraged developers to focus on
the user experience. The folks at Macromedia have persistently
emphasized creating better RIAs
that enhance the user experience. Come to this presentation to learn the
basics of usability. Learn
and apply the fundamentals, and see immediate improvements on the sites
you build.
