I don't know why you're getting that error... have you maybe added ^JasperReports to your CF install? There is already an older version of it included with CF, so it will break the built-in one if you just add it. You can rename and repackage jasperreports, if you want to go the iReport route. There's only two or so other jars you need. I'm running that setup locally, seems ok so far.
I've been meaning to try loading a jasperdesign report with a vanilla install of CF, as I'd suspect it's doable... there's been a good bit of devel with both iReport and ^JasperReports, addition of crosstabs and such (RTF generation!), so you'd probably want to use a old version of iReports, if you want to try using the version that comes with CF (or make reports without using any of the newer features, maybe).
