The cookbook idea is not unique and has been used in other sites and books as well. Personally I think it works well. I think beginners tend to think in terms of problems, "How do I do X"? Whereas a more advanced person knows the language well enough to know basically how things are done, but may struggle more with the setup of larger applications.
