Didn't help, tried everything I could think of, and then, just for sh*ts and grins, I went to Adobe.com and did a fresh download of the updater file. Worked like a charm. Don't know why IA didn't notice that there was something wrong with the other one, but ... Funny thing is that I used that same file to update the developer version on another PC only a week ago, and had no problem!
