Dunno about restarting, but this does look like a weird sentence. Mine says: Specify the relative path to the template to execute when ColdFusion cannot find a requested template ....but I'm running Ent, thus, maybe the difference. It should only pull the custom 404 when there is a custom 404 file in the site root of whatever application you're running, or that's how I thought it worked. A quick test seems to show that behavior. E.G. if I don't have a 404.cfm in the site root, it uses the default 404 in my CFIDE dir.
