Session variables are stored in memory, which is very fast but relatively limited. So, you don't want to persist sessions longer than you have to. Client variables, on the other hand, persist on disk somewhere, and there's no significant cost to keeping them for a long time - often across multiple visits from a user. You can get rid of Client variables by purging them periodically, which is the rough equivalent to the time out you're looking for.
