Indeed, we had a discussion on this and I was for not using evaluate (others were) - though I am not 100% against it, I have never seen bad performance with it all in all.
I believe back in the pre-Java/MX days there was more of a performance hit with evaluate when under heavy load. I've heard that this is not so as much in the current generation. But then I don't usually work with heavy user load applications.
