Try
<cfselect name="typeID" label="Select:" query="gettype" display="type"
value="typeID" queryPosition="below">
<option value="" selected="selected">Select Department</option>
</cfselect>
queryPosition (above/below) will tell cf where to put the query in
relation to the other options you have put in....
