It is very possible that the oracle dbase may be to large to query.
As mentioned, I can query just table listings and it runs;  include the
fields and it stops.

*shrug* may just give up and try a regular odbc connection and access to
link tables.

Is it possible you just have too many tables for CF to query in the timeout
given? If so, you might want to up the timeout using:
  <cfsetting requesttimeout="XXX">

where XXX = time in seconds.
