I have to disagree with that. Most projects I know have very well defined 
procedures and for instance the features in a release are known months 
beforehand even if it is just because the test cycle just takes that long.

And even if it were, how is that different from closed source? For instance, it 
is not the open source projects that routinely prohibit publication of 
benchmarks. It is not the open source projects that give you a 30 day 
evaluation licence of which you spend half the time just getting the thing to 
install.

I recognize the problem, but I don't experience it myself :) This is really a 
case where the quality of the question defines the quality of the answer. If 
you remove all bias and supositions from your question and replace them with 
fact and detail you probably end up with a 50 line question + URLs for logfiles 
and configuration files. People with 'opinions' are not interested in reading 
such questions, while people with answers will be happy to answer.
This won't help you if you are looking for the "please talk me through this 
installer" kind of support. Fine, that is what support contracts are for. For 
which mature Open Source project that you would be considering can you not get 
a support contract from at least three different parties?
