Yep...1st thing you do when you get an error like that is CFDUMP all values 
involved and go from there.

We can theorize what it MAY be all day, but until we know what the actual 
values 
are it may be tough to say ;-)

As it was originally mentioned...NULL could be an issue, so at the very least 
your use of VAL or checking the trimmed length AND it's value should have been 
there from the start.

So now we need to know what the values involved are and try and assess from 
there
