I never saw the original question, but from your response below, maybe
you just need a UNION query?

SELECT *
FROM main m JOIN companies c ON c.companyid=m.manufacturerid
UNION
SELECT *
FROM main m JOIN companies c ON c.companyid=m.publisherid
