i have found another error with the passwords being blank :( i have a dynamic criteria function for each password field, so as they are typing it tells them whether they have entered at least 1 number, at least 1 capital, etc... then when the criteria is met it tells says 'Criteria met'.
if they press save changes then it saves the changes and goes backto normal, which is great.
