Richard, sometime back I inquired about a related topic. Steve Bryant's reply http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/thread.cfm/threadid:47225#249637 included a helpful link on Unobtrusive Javascript. Theres definitely an ever increasing trend of mainstream sites like Yahoo and Google to encourage users to enable js, for, you guessed it AJAX. And that simply ease developers on some of js dilemma.
