For general EXIF metadata, Drew Noakes' Java library is the best I've seen at delivering consistent data from all makes/mfrs of cameras (http://www.drewnoakes.com/code/exif/). You will need access to the server to install the library, though.
I haven't really tested it with Photoshop XMP metadata so I couldn't tell you what information it sends back.
