The DataDirect MS SQL driver used by CF is a type 4 JDBC driver. It doesn't
use ODBC. I suspect that the ADO driver may well be faster, but I don't know
if it's enough faster to make a significant difference. Microsoft's own
benchmarking article on TheServerSide.com is a little fuzzy on that:

On the other hand, JDBC appears to work better against Oracle than ADO does
