That's not the case. (Certainly not in MX7, but I don't think it was true in 
earlier CF/Verity versions, either.)

Our content management system uses the custom fields extensively when indexing 
both database content and physical files. They're pretty much the only way to 
link those files back to the database records with which we need to associate 
them.
