*Michael Smith Interview - Testing*
This talk will be presented at www.cf-undeground.com
MS: I see that your are speaking on "Top notch testing techniques" at
CF_Underground. Why is that
important to developers?
MS2: You can write the cleverest code in the world but if there are bugs
in it your clients won't be
happy! Top notch testing lets you find bugs before your clients do.
MS: Ok we all need happy clients. So what are the best ways to test your
code?
MS2: There are many approaches and I will be sharing some of my
favorites at my talk. But also I
will open up the discuss to everyone present to learn what other methods
people use. On a larger
project I will write a test plan that give various scenarios for the
tester to follow. That way they
can repeat the test the same way when a new version of the code is done.
Also it is important when
testing to document the exact steps to recreate a bug - that way when
the fix comes in you can be
certain it is really fixed. Also the steps help the developer to
reproduce the bug - there is
nothing more frustrating that having a bug that you can reproduce that
users keep reporting!
MS: Yes sometimes users don't give all the steps to reproduce a bug - or
even give page that it is
on! How do you deal with that?
MS2: Partly it is a matter of training your users how you want bugs
reported so you can fix them.
Having an online bug tracking system like the one TeraTech uses works
better than phone or email
because the online form prompts the user for all the info we need on the
bug. Additionally we always
make sure that we include an error handler in our systems - that way
users don't see CF error
message - instead we get a nicely formated email with all the details
that we need. That also deals
with the problem that way less than 100% of users bother to report bugs!
MS: Is there anything new on the testing front?
MS2: In the last 10 years we have seen automated testing tools - where
you script the test plan in a
test program and it runs your code for you and reports bugs. Load
testing tools often include some
of this functionality... More recently test driven development has taken
advanced of automated
testing to write the tests first then write the code and immediately
test it. We will discuss some
of the impacts of this approach.
MS: Cool - see you at CF_Underground
