probably not the workaround you had in mind...but can you switch editors? i've been blogging at cfblog.com and they have tiny set up as the default editor. in a recent entry, i had that exact same problem. first time thru, it works. but when pulling the data from the database for editing, it was unable to properly render the tags.
cfblog gives you the option of which editor to use...so i switched to FCK and it handles the tags perfectly.
