The browser does not pass the # sign or anything after it to the http server... it doesn't show up in any CGI variables for that reason.
In CFMBB, in order to link directly to a message *AND* use an anchor, I had to do something like this thread.cfm?messageid=525#525 Only the browser knows about the # and what's after it.
