Neil are you getting the same problem if using IE and FF. I have a similar problem at the moment and there is a problem that was introduced in IE 6 where it can drop sessions related to cookies; do a google of this site turns up a lot of responses.
Another thing are you using J2EE sessions? The problem I have at the moment is related to CF J2EE sessions clashing with sessions on websphere on the same server. I did a test and the CFID and CFTOKEN are the same before and after the session is dropped but the Jsessionid is different. Waiting for admin to turn off J2EE sessions on the server to see if this works. By the way my problem occurs in IE but not in FireFox, although implementing all the things for fixing IE have not been successful.
