I'll second Neil's comment, it's not that hard.  I had 0 experience with
ajax before I built CFQuickDocs, but the best way to learn is to jump
into a project like that.  You already know CF, which means you already
know HTML and probably are at least familiar with CSS, JavaScript and
DOM.  But if not, don't get intimidated.  It's all a matter of:
1.  "I wonder how you do this?"
2.  "Oh, here's an easy method!"
3.  Do it.

And like the others have said, there are plenty of CF based ajax
frameworks that make most of this stuff very easy to do.
