Create a MS word document, put an image in it, then save AS WEBPAGE. View the source. You will see that the binary image has been stored in Base64 format (think ColdFusion ToBase64()).
Once you see how it is done, you can perhaps manipulate the word document you already have? But this is for web-page-documents... Not full on MS Word documents, so it might not help at all. ......................
