You need to use the FCKeditorAPI to get at the value:
oEditor = FCKeditorAPI.GetInstance('art_article');
myValue = escape(oEditor.GetXHTML(oEditor.FormatOutput));
I know this is in the documentation somewhere, but I found it too long
ago to point you to the specific part.
