Dan, Thanks for your reply. For "out of the box" software I've typically used SiteDirector by Quill (http://www.quilldesign.com) - its great - heard of it? For this new project I'm really going to need a lot of customization so I'm curious to see if anyone's developed anything they consider "enterprise grade" (whatever that means). My request is really more a net for talent than a search for a specific product.
Your open-source thing sounds interesting. Paul G at Quill is a pretty open guy, I wonder if he would want to get involved in something like that... I'll forward him this thread.
